Understanding Copyright: Mrs. Dran Period 6

What is copyright?  In class today, we watched the music video What’s Copyright?, read the article Understanding Copyright by Renee Hobbs, Katie Donnelly, and Sandra Braman, and had discussions about copyright.  You also completed a worksheet about what you learned and listed question you have about copyright with your partner.  You even had time to do some research and explore answers to questions you have.

Individually, post a comment (a short paragraph) about what you learned about copyright.  Your post should include at least one thing you learned from looking up your questions from the worksheet.  You may also include anything you learned today, and any questions you may still have about copyright.  Remember, use proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization!

Today i have learned about copyright. i learned facts and other information about the differetn uses, and what is copyright. Copyright is built upon fair use. It also is in common with the first amendment. There are two questions in deciding if a particular use of copyright work is a fair use. But courts try to return to it again and again over the recent years.

  2. Scooch Said:

Today i learned about copyright and fair use. The First Amendment rights are protect by copyright like; freedom of press, freedom of speech, and freedom of religon. I learned that copright is more than just reproducing a person’s work. Also, i learned that faire use was created to help people to be allowed to use copyright materical for; criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. One question i have is what are the punishments and consequences for being caught copyrighting.

  3. Anthony Said:

Today i learned about copyright and fair use. I learned that copyright is protected under the first amendment. Fair use was created to help people to be allowed to use copyright material for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. I also learned that when copyright was first created, it lasted 14 years plus an additional 14 years if the copyright owner renewed the registration. Copyright was created to help the people protect their intellectual property.

  4. Brianna Said:

I’ve learned many things about copyright, such as copyright laws are built off the values of the first amendment. Copyright owners can sell, transfer, rent, lend, or lease ownership; however when someone commits copyright infringement, the copyright owner can stop them from printing, performing, or otherwise sharing the work. In the fair use doctrine, The Copyright Act of 1976 states that the use of copyright material “for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research” is not infringement.

  5. Crisi Said:

Throughout the unit covering copyright I’ve learned a lot about copyright and how it came about. Copyright was first introduced in the Constitution promoting the widespread of knowledge and innovation. The founding fathers were afraid that citizens would discover new information but ,in fear of their work being stolen, would not publish it. Copyright protects a work 70 years after the author’s death. There are also laws protecting the public from copyright infringement such as the Fair Use Doctrine which generally protects individuals who use copyrighted work for the benefit of society (teaching, scholarship, research, etc.).

  6. Shekala Coleman Said:

I have learned that copyright is centered off of the first amendment, even though somethings may be copyrighted, it is still free to the public to a ceratin extent. For example, although almost all school books are copyrighted, we as students are still allowed to read and learn from them, and teachers are allowed to teach from them. The following example is due to the fair use doctrine which states that “The use of copyrighted material for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reports, teaching, scholarships, or research is NOT AN INFRINGEMENT”. Although i did learn alot about copyright, i still wonder the price of getting something copyrighted.

  7. Jon Anderson Said:

Today I have learned about copyright and fair use. I have learned that copyright is protected under the first amendment of the constitution. Also I have learned that owners do not have total control over how their work is used by the public. Fair use allows people to use copyright work for research, criticism, coment, scholarships, teaching, and news reporting. One question I have is what must a person do to obtain a copyright for something.

  8. Leah Barkovich Said:

The past few days in the library have helped me to learn a lot about copyrighting. I now understand the laws were put into place because of the ignorant, illegal use of other people’s work. Copyright can be used on all differnt forms of work such as; art, movies, books, and inventions. Fair use is the use of copyrighted material such as critism, common news reporting, teaching, ect. I think that creators, inventors, and authors should be able to copyright their work. They spent long, sleepless nights writing or thinking about their product and no one else should be able to claim their work.

  9. Bobby Said:

Today we covered copyright and fair use. Copyright was introduced way back when the constitution was being crerated, in order to promote the knowledge and innovation. This reduced the scare of new ideas being stolen and the creator, not being credited. The first ammendment rights are protected by copyright. If an item is copyrighted, it is protected for up to seventy years after the creators death. I learned that fair use protects against copyright infringement. It enables the user to use the piece of work for comment, news, teaching, reporting, criticism, scholarship, or research.

a copule of day ago we were learning and talking about copyright and fair use. copy write act was make in 1976. it was made to procet people ideas and motovate peolpe to. so copyright was a good idea and how u can use it is fair to

  11. Rider Said:

Today we learned about copyright and fair use. Copyright has been around since our country began. This was done to promote the sharing of ideas and knowledge. Anyone who made a product or thought of a new idea was safe from having their works stolen. The first ammendment is were the copyright laws come from. Fair use stops people from infringing on other peoples rights. This allows the user to branch off from the original works to create something all their own to turn a profit, inform people, and help the general public.

  12. Nanette Davenport Said:

In the library we are learning about fair use and copyright. Copyright is when someone else take anothers work without permission or changing the idea of the image, sound, ect. Fair use is so that even though its copyrighted it can still be used for new ideas and new creations and to better improve our world. Thease were put in place when the consitution was first made and were needed so that more people would feel safe and able to create their own ideas and use them to have their own profit. Copyright and Fair use is used on movie, books, inventions, art and some others. Without copyright and fair we would not be where we are today, improving and inventing new things.

  13. Krista Hinzman Said:

I have learned that copyright has many different sides. Also it has many ways of being taken. We learned about fair use and having “some rights reserved,” these are both different ways of taking copyright. One question i had was who gets the copyrights after a person dies? I found that the copyright would either go to heirs or the owner would have to specifically pass the copyright onto someone else through a will. I dont really have any other questions about copyright thanks to the things we read in class.

  14. sutey Said:

I have learned many things about copyright. Anyone can use copyright. Copyright law protects the works for “itellectual property”. The copyright law deals with the First Amendment mainly. We would never be able to write or blog without breaking the law if we did not have the First Amendment. The fair use is for multi-proposes such as to help to make sure that the citizens are able to obtain the information they must have to thourghly have to act as a citizen. Fair use is mainly used in films. Copyright will last for 14 years, plus 14 additional years if the copyright owner renewed the registration.

  15. Fratangeli Said:

In the library we learned about Fair use and copyright laws. With the first amendment, it was implied that some one who creates something has rights to what ever it is they created. This allowed people to make their own things and not worry about anyone stealing from them. Fair use lets people take from other peoples copyrighted works for the good of the public. This allows one person to add to anothers ideas or create something imformative, but not make them worry about being sued for copyright infringement

  16. Abby Said:

After spending a couple of days in the library, i have come to learn many new things about copyright and fair use. it was started back in the 70’s to protect writers work from being stolen by less creative people trying to steal good work. Copyright was based off of the First Admendement and is now protected under it.

  17. Haley Said:

The past few days, we have learned about copyright and fair use. Copyright is protected and built upon the values of the first amendment. It protects the works of intellectual property, and without fair use, copyright would limit the first amendment rights. Books, movies, music, paintings, photographs, etc. are all protected by copyright. A work created today by an individual author will be protected by copyright for 70 years after the author dies.

  18. Brock Said:

The other day i learned about fair use and copyright laws. The first amenment helps out the fair use of material. Some things are legal to copy but there are guide lines. But one question is what the punishment would be if you did copy something that was illegal to copy?

  19. Nicole Novosel Said:

I have learned a lot about copyright in this lesson. Copyright promotes creativity. Copyright law builds upon the values of the first amendment in the constitution by emphasizing that sharing ideas leads to new knowledge. Fair use has many purposes. It can provide guidence to people with in the community who need copyrighted materials freely in order to produce their own work. It protects against copyright infringement. It promotes knowledge and innovation.

  21. Brittany Druzak Said:

The past few days i have learned a lot about copyright and fair use. Mrs. Busch taught me things about copyright and fair use through some cases that i thought were very interesting. At first i really wasa not interested in this stuff but after getting to understand it it’s not that bad. I learned the first ammendment is centered around copyright. One question that i had these past few days was this. What will happen if you get caught copyrighting something?

  22. Taylor O'Rosky Said:

Throughout the past couple of days on the library I’ve been learning about copyright. I learned that its protected under the 1st admendment, it involves multiple differnt rights, and protects the intellectual property. I also learned how fair use protects againts infringment of other users.

  23. Simmons Said:

These past couple days in the library my class and I have been learning about copyright and fair use. I have learned that copyright is something that somebody gets to protect thier work that they do not want anyone to duplicate. We also learned that copyright revolves around the first amendment and fair use. Fair use states that citizens have the right to copyrighted work with out needing permission from the copyright holder or payment. A copyright today lasts up to fourteen years and when it has expired the holder is permitted to renew it

  24. Dom Rizzuto Said:

In the libary, i learned about copyright and fair use. copyright was created in 1787 with the idea that it was created to protect the works of the people that created the work or wat ever it is that they created. its mostly used so other people cant copy and make money off something that someone else created. now fair use is the use of someone else works to better themselves or others but no money can be made from useing other peoples works it has to be used for some good other than finachial gain. some other facts are that copyright can still aply up to 120 years after the creator dies.
